Remember, fruits should only be 10% of your dragon’s diet

While many fruits are okay, as a general rule you want to make sure that they take up only 10% of your bearded dragon’s diet. They are high in sugars and you want your dragon to be ingesting food that has a good calcium to phosphorous ration.

As this is uncommon in most fruits, they are considered fine for variety but you don’t want to just serve them by themselves.

A nutritional profile of strawberries

Strawberries have a lot going for them from a nutritional perspective. Aside from being delicious for both of you, strawberries contain:

  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin C
  • Calcium
  • Phosphorous

Fresh strawberries are safe… in moderation

Strawberries, as it turns out, DO have a good calcium and phosphorous ratio, but you still wouldn’t want to just give them a bowlful as an entire meal. In fact, some recommend that you should only give your dragon one large strawberry, but into smaller pieces with the top and all, every 2 -4 weeks.

The answer is a firm yes… as long as you always moderate the portions.

What about non-fresh varieties?

Of course strawberries are available a number of ways and so the temptation is there to see if your bearded dragon might like them. Not all strawberry mediums are good for your bearded dragon, though, so here’s the scoop on those ‘other strawberries:

  • Dried strawberries – Dried strawberries are off the menu. While they store well and that’s an obvious perk, they contain added sugars that are bad for your bearded dragon. So keep the dried strawberries for yourself and give your dragon the fresh ones!
  • Strawberry jam or preserves – Another case of too much sugar and some preservatives to boot, strawberry or any jam or preserves are fine for YOUR sandwiches but not healthy for your dragon.
  • Frozen strawberries – If there are no added sugars then if you properly thaw them out, these can be okay. Store bought frozen strawberries, however, often contain sugars and if served frozen can even pose a choking hazard. It’s better to just avoid these completely and go with fresh ones.
