Tomatoes have a lot of good vitamins in them

Tomatoes are rich in Vitamin A, which is very good news or your bearded dragon. They also bring some other vitamins and nutrients to the table, such as:

  • Vitamin C
  • Potassium
  • Folate
  • Vitamin K1
  • High fiber content

Largely made of water, tomatoes are also good for helping to hydrate your bearded dragon, so they are definitely a welcome addition to your pet’s food bowl. You will want to add them in measured amounts, however, and we’ll tell you why.

Can bearded dragons eat tomatoes? Most definitely, but moderation is a good idea.

Moderation is still a good idea

While tomatoes are good for your bearded dragon, this is only the case in small amounts. They have a minimal level of phosphorous and no calcium, so while they are good for vitamins and some tasty variety for your dragon they don’t bring much else to the table.

Here are some quick guidelines for feeding tomatoes to your bearded dragon that you will want to follow when introducing them into their diet:

  • Tomatoes are technically fruits, not vegetables, and fruits should only be about 10% of your dragon’s diet
  • Serve no more than ¼ of a medium-sized tomato and this no more than once a month for variety
  • Cut the tomato into cubes and place it on top of their greens so they can spot it when it’s fresh
  • Make sure that the tomato has been thoroughly cleaned to remove any pesticides
  • Serve the tomatoes raw, not cooked, as cooking removes a large portion of the nutrients from the tomatoes

The final verdict: Can bearded dragons eat tomatoes?

Tomatoes are just fine as a bit of variety in your dragon’s diet, provided that you moderate the amounts and keep the frequency to once a month (although twice a month should be just fine as well if your bearded dragon really likes them).
